Joseph J. Maltese, CFP, ChFC, CLU, LUTCF

Message From the President
Joseph J. Maltese, CFP®, ChFC, CLU, LUTCF

January 1st marked the beginning of the second decade of this millennium. As we contemplate what this new decade might bring, we must recognize our part in creating and protecting opportunities for our clients and our profession.

As financial professionals, our responsibilities to our clients include assuring the financial security of their families and/or their businesses, as well as assisting them in creating and protecting wealth. To do this effectively, we must gain detailed information about our clients’ wants, needs and values. The proper gathering and interpretation of this information allows us to recommend appropriate and suitable solutions to our clients. As new regulations emerge, the focus on appropriate and suitable solutions and products will become paramount.

NAIFA members must communicate to our state and federal legislative bodies to assure these new regulations are sensible and allow those in our profession to accomplish this important work for our clients. Additionally, we must communicate on behalf of our clients to assure sensible legislation affecting their financial security. Of the many issues currently being considered by legislators are regulation for financial planning, and of course, the future of the estate tax.

The regulation of financial planning is addressed in the Investor Protection Act of 2009. As is evident by one of the amendments to this bill as proposed by Rep. Capuano of Massachusetts who adds, “…the unique role of financial planners in providing comprehensive advice in investment planning, income tax planning, education planning, retirement planning, estate planning, risk management, and other areas with respect to the management of financial resources; and any gaps in the regulation of financial planners given existing State and Federal regulation of financial planning activities and the need to provide related consumer protections for such financial planning activities,” these sweeping regulations will affect everyone in our business at some level.

Meanwhile, Senator Max Baucus, Chair of the Senate Finance Committee, and Rep. Charles Rangel, Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, are immersed in the mire of the estate tax legislation. When considering the voting history of these gentlemen, it becomes apparent that our members must speak up to help preserve the estates of our clients.

NAIFA continues to lobby for sensible legislation. Our association needs each and every one of us so that our voice remains strong. If you have relationships with legislators, please communicate the names to your board so that we may leverage these relationships when key issues come up for vote. Finally, please invite anyone that is connected in anyway to our profession to join our association. We must continue to strengthen our membership and our voice.

Best wishes for a healthy, happy, and prosperous 2010!

Be better today than you were yesterday… but not as good as you will be tomorrow.

Bob Isham

In Memoriam
Robert John Isham, Sr. "Bob" 71, longtime resident
of Jacksonville, passed away on December 21, 2009.

Born in Binghamton, NY, Bob proudly served as a Marine in his beloved Corps with life lessons he never forgot.

Bob attended Syracuse University and loved the "Orangemen" basketball along with the Jacksonville Jaguars. In fact, Bob attended the Jaguars' last home game the Thursday night before his passing. Bob was a proud member of "DKE" Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, University Club and Mandarin Presbyterian Church.

Bob treasured his clients of Isham and Associates, PA. He was a Chartered Life Underwriter since 1973, a member of the Society of Financial Service Professionals for 37 years, served as Past President for SPSP, and was currently serving as a National Advisor. A member of NAIFA since 1966 and lifetime member of MDRT, he followed the footsteps of his grandfather and father in the insurance industry and had served his cherished clients and business associates for 48 years.

Bob is survived by his wife, Carol, three sons, Robert (Alana) Isham, Jr., John (Lisa) Isham, David (Melinda) Isham, two step children, Greta Matzen, Max (Mayumi) Matzen, six grandchildren, Katherine, Ashley, Robert, Kaitlyn, Cameron and Julian. Also mourning his loss is his German Shepherd, Rex.

Bob loved his industry, was always at our monthly luncheons, and always said he would die working. He was such a gentle soul, the ultimate professional, caring and warm to everyone who knew him. Bob collapsed from a heart attack at the Cadillac dealership while taking his car in for service. The rescue team was not able to revive him.

For those who attended his service, it was a highly emotional event. His stepson, Max Matzen along with his wife, Mayumi, played the piano and trumpet at Mandarin Presbyterian Church.  The Marine Corp was at the graveside, a beautiful but very cold day.  Taps was again played in the distance while the American Flag was folded and presented to Carol.

Carol shared that Bob had spent the last 3 days of his life more relaxed, feeling well and happier than he'd been in a very long time.  We can be grateful for having known Bob and for the fact he did not suffer at the end of his life. He will be dearly missed by his friends, family and his clients.

Andy Laino, CFP®, CLU, CLTC started his career with Prudential in April, 2000 as a fee-based financial planner with Prudential Financial Planning Services. Prior to joining Prudential, Andy operated a not-for-profit child welfare services organization in Jacksonville, Florida. Yet it was a life changing event during a “routine childbirth” that lead him to the financial services industry.

Andy earned his undergraduate degree from Auburn University, and Masters degree from the University of North Florida.

In 2001, Andy partnered with Denny Axman, AEP, CFP®, CLU, ChFC and utilized the formal MDRT Mentoring program to develop his skills and abilities in executive benefits, financial and estate planning services. This mutually beneficial relationship fostered Andy’s growth and development in working with high net worth business owners, and ultimately lead him to purchase Mr. Axman’s practice in 2006.  Since then Andy has also acquired two additional financial services practices and consults with other financial services professionals along the east coast.

Andy is a 5-year qualifier and Court of the Table member of the Million Dollar Roundtable, a certificant and licensee with the Certified Financial Planner™ Board of Standards, a graduate of the American College’s Chartered Life Underwriter program, a member of the Financial Planning Association’s National and North Florida Chapters, a member of the Northeast Florida Estate Planning Council, and member of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors.

Andy is active in his church, serves on the Foundation Board for Baptist Hospital and the North Florida 4-H Foundation. He is business mentor through the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce - Woman Business Owner’s ATHENA mentoring program, and is active with the Christ’s Starfish Foundation. He is married to Wendy Adams Laino and they have two children, Emily, 13 and Drew, 10. When Andy is not at work you can find him mentoring other professionals through study groups, or on the sidelines of a soccer field coaching his children’s teams.

2010 Blood Drive Schedule
Submitted by Alicia Burst, Blood Drive Chair.

At our November luncheon, I announced that I'd made a personal commitment to hold these drives on behalf of our Association every 60 days. But the Blood Alliance will not agree, as we've simply not made the goals they needed us to honor.

2010 Blood Drive

Instead, we've agreed to once a quarter and here are the dates for 2010:

February 11May 6August 19 November 4

If you are a regular donor, please make it a point to commit to these dates. The Blood Alliance is imploring all donors to make and keep appointments from here forward as it is the only way to stay organized. We had to turn away several willing donors this last time due to unexpected walk-ins.
